In our Creative Project Realisation module session Chrissie went through what the role of the Producer includes and how the
work of the producer fits in with the film making process.
Chrissie pointed out that being a producer isn't just an administration
role, the organisational side of things is usually the responsibility of
the Production Manager.
Using the Skillset definitions, the producer is defined thus:
- turns story ideas into a profitable cinematic experience
- persuades others to share in the creative vision
The producer may be the first in the process: the person who has the
idea for a film or programme. The producer might then employ the
services of writer and director.
There is a 'golden triangle' in film making, that of producer - director - writer.
The producer participates directly in all main areas of the production,
seeing the process through from idea development to post production,
marketing and distribution.
The producer brings together the 'dream team' of screenwriters,
director, production designer, cast, financial parties and production
team.
The producer is the creative visionary who is motivator to the team and
negotiator to al parties, internal and external, to see the project
through to completion.
The producer needs the knowledge of how films work and the processes involved, and the drive to get the film made.
The producer is accountable for the success of the finished film.
Here is the link to the Creative Skillset 'Role of the Producer' page
(job profile) which goes into a lot more detail about the role and
responsibilities:

There is a good page on the understandingfilm website which summarises the other major roles within the production team.
I thought this would be useful to post up and include in the production toolkit for reference.
