Review of Filming: 16 March, Hillsborough
Saturday's filming was scheduled to be a mop up session to get all the extra cut away shots and stadium shots that we decided would improve the edit for the two minute and ten minute films.
I created a schedule and shot list based on the list of shots that Hannah, and the rest of us, had decided that we would like filming.
Joe has been working on the two minute poetic film edit where we began by making an assembly in Final Cut Pro that ran faithful to the storyboard, but all the while we were looking at other footage as we reviewed and logged it and found other shots that we hadn't planned but managed to see and film on the day. Joe is working hard at incorporating these new, good shots into the film.
On Saturday we met at 1100 and did an hour of atmos shots of the stadium from the Leppings Lane end, a side of the stadium that we hadn't previously filmed. We had Peter Farley helping us which was great as it meant that we got a lot more footage.
We all brought our DSLRs to film and take photos with and Jacob also had the Sony Z1 with which to film the crowds gathering at Hillsborough.
Luke took the Marantz into the ground and recorded the crowd noise during the match. These sounds are being used for both the two minute and the ten minute films.
At noon we went to meet Tango Man at the Hillsborough Club to get a re-shoot of him walking down the street (we wanted a closer frame and from both sides) and some informal footage of him with his friends drinking in the club prior to the match. As with previous shoots with Tango Man I took a lead role in organising the shooting and liaised with Tango Man to get him where we wanted him and talk through each scene with him. Once we had the shot established, as filming started, Hannah directed Tango, asking him to try different things and go again for different shots.
Tango has been brilliant with the crew and has been co-operative with me in organising meetings, filming days and shots, and listens to Hannah as she directs the shots and is happy to be directed by her.
All this footage, plus the cut aways has come out really well and we have shots to choose from, which is a good position to be in.
It is Monday morning and we are splicing in the cut aways that we like and which we shot knowing that they would fit in with the mood and pace of the film.
